Wooden Lis-Inspired Fish Raffle Today!

11/11

waka
Tonight the family and friends of Jordan Kelly will join together at Corduroy Boutique, along with the Grain Surfboards family, to raffle off a lovingly crafted 5′4″ wooden Waka Fish. Proceeds from the tickets will benefit the Jordan Kelly Memorial Fund, which will provide opportunities for at-risk kids to learn the art of wooden surfboard building through a partnership between Stoked Mentoring and Grain. Learn more about Jordan’s board and buy tickets after the jump.

Almost one year ago our local surfing community lost a bright light when Jordan passed away in a tragic auto accident. Since then, the story of Jordan’s love for wave riding and wood working has united the distant corners of the surfing world. Jeff Martin, a British Columbian craftsman, was moved to create the Waka Fish in Jordan’s memory, and the board has since traveled to Australia where it was ridden and signed by Rasta. We’re currently working on a Drift Feature article (written by Jeff) that will go into greater detail, but in the time being, please take a moment to purchase a $10 ticket to honor Jordan’s memory.

In the meantime, we’ll let Jeff give a quick description of his experience building the board. Video by Bryant Bell.

All in all, the Waka and the Memorial Fund are about joy–the joy Jordan found in the ocean and in working with wood, and the joy of riding such a beautiful surf craft. That last part is pretty apparent in this clip of Rasta riding the board, which will hopefully be included in Mick Waters’ next film.
