Also this weekend: Original Girls in the Curl
2/5
The women in the water today are hands down the most progressive to have ever paddled out, but there’s something to be said for being first. And all girls in the line-up today owe their place to the pioneering queens of noseriding from the 1960’s. Come pay respects to surf royalty Linda Benson, who will be honored with a “Lifetime Contribution to Surfing Award” at Pepperdine University’s “Girl in the Curl” event on February 6 in Malibu.
The ladies day extravaganza is a geekfest of log riding history, featuring Benson, Kathy Kohner (best known as the muse for “Gidget”) and pro Shelley Merrick, who will provide an oral history lesson on the sport. Quintessential California surfer girl Holly Beck will
comment on the current state of the surf union with reps from Body Glove and the surf retail store, Girl in the Curl. Providing live tunes on his guitar will be Denny Aaberg, Malibu surfer and co-writer of “Big Wednesday.” Now if we can only convince this multigenerational roster to paddle out together afterwards for a hall of fame shred session…
