Santa Barbara Film Festival
2/8
180° South, the new film by Chris Malloy, premiers this week at the Santa Barbara Film Festival. It’s not the only surf movie/documentary on the bill though, in fact, there’s a week’s worth of screenings to check out.
Tickets are $15 at the box office, or you can grab a four pack for $57.
180° South chronicles Jeff Johnson’s surf/climbing trip to the remotest areas of Patagonia, following a route taken by Yvon Chouinard and Doug Tompkins in 1968 (and chronicled in the absolutely killer film Mountain of the Storms). In the end, the journey and the film end up being as much about conservation as riding waves and climbing peaks.

Shaped is the story of the early days of surfboard shaping, with some pretty candid stuff coming from the likes of Renny Yater, Bing Copeland, Greg Noll, Skip Frye, Hobie Alter and Tom Morey.

God Went Surfing with the Devil
We’ve already written enough about this outstanding documentary on surfing the Gaza Strip, so we’ll just say that you should take the opportunity to see it on a big screen.

Out of Place won the Viewer’s Choice Award at the New York Surf Film Fest last fall. Drift also devoted a fair amount of coverage to this film, which you can check out here, so we’ll call it “highly recommended” and leave the rest up to you. Watch dudes surf in the middle of winter in Cleveland will definitely make you think twice about complaining about your next “chilly” dawn patrol session.

Finally, Hana Surf Girls documents the lives of two young women in Hana, a remote town on east coast of Maui. We haven’t see this one, but judging by the trailer, it seems like Russ Spencer invested a lot in the project (and we’re not talking about money).
